Jana Joyce of Bloomfield is a trained chef; she graduated from ICE in New York City. Which is the reason, she said, her jams aren't your run-of-the-mill fruit and sugar concoctions. She incorporates herbs and spices including basil, cardamom and rosemary, into her creations, made with seasonal fruits. "I'm inspired by what I see in the markets,' Jana said. She started making jams about seven years ago to give as gifts and barter for home repair. One person she hired happened to have a brick-and-mortar shop in Montclair. She liked Jana's jams so much, she began to sell them at her shop. Soon after, Jana began to sell her jams at more stores, at farmers markets and online. Today, you can find them at the General Store Coop, the MC Hotel in Montclair as well as other shops and online.
Jana's homerun jam is Pear Lemon Ginger Conserve; it won Best in Show at the American Cheese Society in 2018. The jam is made with Comice pears (her favorite), crystallized ginger and fresh lemons. Another top seller during the holidays is Winter Berry Jam, made with local cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, chopped clementines and cinnamon, cardamom and cloves.
